    Relationship between Slug-Test and Effective Hydraulic Conductivities for 2-Dimensional Heterogeneous Aquifers

    Slug tests are one of the most common field tests used by hydrogeologists to evaluate the hydraulic conductivity of an aquifer system. Steady-state and transient (slug test) numerical simulations were run in 37, 2-dimensional randomized multifractal hydraulic conductivity fields. Each field consisted of 59,049 individual saturated hydraulic conductivity (K) values with varying numbers of hydrofacies and different degrees of spatial heterogeneity. The Keff values were determined by examining the flux in and out of the steady-state numerical model. The Kslug values were determined by adding a slug of water to the center node of the field and evaluating the numerical head response over time with the Cooper-Bredehoeft-Papadopulos method. The zone of influence of the slug test was also measured for each realization. The variance of ln(Kslug) decreased as the zone of influence increased. Keff and Kslug were determined on 100 realizations of a specific multifractal field. The Kslug values followed a distribution similar to that of the field hydraulic conductivity values, while the Keff values exhibited a much narrower distribution. Linear regression analyses of ln(Keff) on ln(Kslug) were performed to evaluate how well the slug test values predicted the effective saturated hydraulic conductivity at each individual scale and over all scales. The results of these regression analyses showed that ln(Kslug) underestimates the hydraulic conductivity in low hydraulic conductivity material with high K inclusions and overestimates the hydraulic conductivity in extremely high hydraulic conductivity fields with low K inclusions. Averaging three replicate measurements of ln(Kslug) resulted in a significant reduction of error associated with the prediction of ln(Keff). The mean absolute difference between ln(Keff) and ln(Kslug) also decreased as the size of the hydrofacies decreased

    Community next steps for making globally unique identifiers work for biocollections data

    Biodiversity data is being digitized and made available online at a rapidly increasing rate but current practices typically do not preserve linkages between these data, which impedes interoperation, provenance tracking, and assembly of larger datasets. For data associated with biocollections, the biodiversity community has long recognized that an essential part of establishing and preserving linkages is to apply globally unique identifiers at the point when data are generated in the field and to persist these identifiers downstream, but this is seldom implemented in practice. There has neither been coalescence towards one single identifier solution (as in some other domains), nor even a set of recommended best practices and standards to support multiple identifier schemes sharing consistent responses. In order to further progress towards a broader community consensus, a group of biocollections and informatics experts assembled in Stockholm in October 2014 to discuss community next steps to overcome current roadblocks. The workshop participants divided into four groups focusing on: identifier practice in current field biocollections; identifier application for legacy biocollections; identifiers as applied to biodiversity data records as they are published and made available in semantically marked-up publications; and cross-cutting identifier solutions that bridge across these domains. The main outcome was consensus on key issues, including recognition of differences between legacy and new biocollections processes, the need for identifier metadata profiles that can report information on identifier persistence missions, and the unambiguous indication of the type of object associated with the identifier. Current identifier characteristics are also summarized, and an overview of available schemes and practices is provided

Ces restes squelettiques se rapportent Ă  huit individus, trois adultes et cinq sujets immatures, qui ont Ă©tĂ© inhumĂ©s Ă  l’état de cadavres frais dans un laps de temps relativement court. Les questions qui se posent pour ce dĂ©pĂŽt inhabituel sont de plusieurs ordres. Elles concernent, d’une part, des aspects biologiques liĂ©s au recrutement et au profil de mortalitĂ© des inhumĂ©s et, d’autre part, des aspects archĂ©ologiques relatifs au caractĂšre sĂ©pulcral ou non de la gestion de ces dĂ©cĂšs rapprochĂ©s.Human remains were discovered in the lower part of a Middle Neolithic I Chassean well during an excavation (INRAP) at the site of Fumerian-Manduel near Nimes (Gard, France). These skeletal remains belong to eight individuals, three adults and five subadults, who were buried as fresh corpses in a relatively short lapse of time. This unusual deposit gives rise to questions of various kinds, which include, on the one hand, biological aspects related to the recruitment and mortality profile of the buried individuals and, on the other hand, archaeological aspects concerned with the funerary nature – or otherwise - of the handling of these deaths that occurred close together in time

    Challenges to peer support in low- and middle-income countries during COVID-19.

    BACKGROUND: A recent editorial urged those working in global mental health to "change the conversation" on coronavirus disease (Covid-19) by putting more focus on the needs of people with severe mental health conditions. UPSIDES (Using Peer Support In Developing Empowering mental health Services) is a six-country consortium carrying out implementation research on peer support for people with severe mental health conditions in high- (Germany, Israel), lower middle- (India) and low-income (Tanzania, Uganda) settings. This commentary briefly outlines some of the key challenges faced by UPSIDES sites in low- and middle-income countries as a result of Covid-19, sharing early lessons that may also apply to other services seeking to address the needs of people with severe mental health conditions in similar contexts. CHALLENGES AND LESSONS LEARNED: The key take-away from experiences in India, Tanzania and Uganda is that inequalities in terms of access to mobile technologies, as well as to secure employment and benefits, put peer support workers in particularly vulnerable situations precisely when they and their peers are also at their most isolated. Establishing more resilient peer support services requires attention to the already precarious situation of people with severe mental health conditions in low-resource settings, even before a crisis like Covid-19 occurs. While it is essential to maintain contact with peer support workers and peers to whatever extent is possible remotely, alternatives to face-to-face delivery of psychosocial interventions are not always straightforward to implement and can make it more difficult to observe individuals' reactions, talk about emotional issues and offer appropriate support. CONCLUSIONS: In environments where mental health care was already heavily medicalized and mostly limited to medications issued by psychiatric institutions, Covid-19 threatens burgeoning efforts to pursue a more holistic and person-centered model of care for people with severe mental health conditions. As countries emerge from lockdown, those working in global mental health will need to redouble their efforts not only to make up for lost time and help individuals cope with the added stressors of Covid-19 in their communities, but also to regain lost ground in mental health care reform and in broader conversations about mental health in low-resource settings

    A geometric morphometric approach to the study of variation of shovel-shaped incisors

    Objectives: The scoring and analysis of dental nonmetric traits are predominantly accomplished by using the Arizona State University Dental Anthropology System (ASUDAS), a standard protocol based on strict definitions and three‐dimensional dental plaques. However, visual scoring, even when controlled by strict definitions of features, visual reference, and the experience of the observer, includes an unavoidable part of subjectivity. In this methodological contribution, we propose a new quantitative geometric morphometric approach to quickly and efficiently assess the variation of shoveling in modern human maxillary central incisors (UI1). Materials and methods: We analyzed 87 modern human UI1s by means of virtual imaging and the ASU‐UI1 dental plaque grades using geometric morphometrics by placing semilandmarks on the labial crown aspect. The modern human sample was composed of individuals from Europe, Africa, and Asia and included representatives of all seven grades defined by the ASUDAS method. Results: Our results highlighted some limitations in the use of the current UI1 ASUDAS plaque, indicating that it did not necessarily represent an objective gradient of expression of a nonmetric tooth feature. Rating of shoveling tended to be more prone to intra‐ and interobserver bias for the highest grades. In addition, our analyses suggest that the observers were strongly influenced by the depth of the lingual crown aspect when assessing the shoveling. Discussion: In this context, our results provide a reliable and reproducible framework reinforced by statistical results supporting the fact that open scale numerical measurements can complement the ASUDAS method

Responding to a perceived need, this editorial announces establishment of ZooKeys – a new online and print journal in zoological taxonomy and systematics, which aims to quickly respond and adapt to the newest developments in taxonomic publishing. Open Access is accepted as mandatory for ZooKeys. The rationale for and concept of ZooKeys is discussed in detail

    Challenges in quantifying changes in the global water cycle

    Human influences have likely already impacted the large-scale water cycle but natural variability and observational uncertainty are substantial. It is essential to maintain and improve observational capabilities to better characterize changes. Understanding observed changes to the global water cycle is key to predicting future climate changes and their impacts. While many datasets document crucial variables such as precipitation, ocean salinity, runoff, and humidity, most are uncertain for determining long-term changes. In situ networks provide long time-series over land but are sparse in many regions, particularly the tropics. Satellite and reanalysis datasets provide global coverage, but their long-term stability is lacking. However, comparisons of changes among related variables can give insights into the robustness of observed changes. For example, ocean salinity, interpreted with an understanding of ocean processes, can help cross-validate precipitation. Observational evidence for human influences on the water cycle is emerging, but uncertainties resulting from internal variability and observational errors are too large to determine whether the observed and simulated changes are consistent. Improvements to the in situ and satellite observing networks that monitor the changing water cycle are required, yet continued data coverage is threatened by funding reductions. Uncertainty both in the role of anthropogenic aerosols, and due to large climate variability presently limits confidence in attribution of observed changes

    A systematic review of influences on implementation of peer support work for adults with mental health problems

    © 2019, The Author(s). Purpose: The evidence base for peer support work in mental health is established, yet implementation remains a challenge. The aim of this systematic review was to identify influences which facilitate or are barriers to implementation of mental health peer support work. Methods: Data sources comprised online databases (n = 11), journal table of contents (n = 2), conference proceedings (n = 18), peer support websites (n = 2), expert consultation (n = 38) and forward and backward citation tracking. Publications were included if they reported on implementation facilitators or barriers for formal face-to-face peer support work with adults with a mental health problem, and were available in English, French, German, Hebrew, Luganda, Spanish or Swahili. Data were analysed using narrative synthesis. A six-site international survey [Germany (2 sites), India, Israel, Tanzania, Uganda] using a measure based on the strongest influences was conducted. The review protocol was pre-registered (Prospero: CRD42018094838). Results: The search strategy identified 5813 publications, of which 53 were included. Fourteen implementation influences were identified, notably organisational culture (reported by 53% of papers), training (42%) and role definition (40%). Ratings on a measure using these influences demonstrated preliminary evidence for the convergent and discriminant validity of the identified influences. Conclusion: The identified influences provide a guide to implementation of peer support. For services developing a peer support service, organisational culture including role support (training, role clarity, resourcing and access to a peer network) and staff attitudes need to be considered. The identified influences provide a theory base to prepare research sites for implementing peer support worker interventions
